Potable Water
We supply specialist grades of both powdered and granular activated carbon and anthracite for Potable Water.
Potable Water solutions
Activated Carbon Technologies provides solutions for municipalities to ensure the safety of water intended for public consumption and utilization. We strictly adhere to national and international regulations and certifications, such as those established by the NSF and AWWA, to guarantee complete compliance and adherence to stringent water quality standards. Our global teams comprise experts who are well-versed in the regulations governing various countries.
Our activated carbon products significantly elevate the quality of drinking water by effectively removing:
- Algal metabolites, including taste and odor compounds like MIB and geosmin, as well as BGA toxins such as microcystins
- Pesticides and their degradation by-products, exemplified by metolachlor ESA and OXA
- Organic matter (DOC) and their disinfection by-product precursors (DBPs)
- Man-made chemicals, such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
- Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) and micropollutants
- Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs)
- Industrial and agricultural chemicals
Granular Activated Carbon
for Potable Water
Granular activated carbon is used in a filter through which the water is gravity fed. The GAC is regularly backwashed to control head loss and to regulate the biology. GAC will not need to be replaced until it is exhausted which typically takes several years in adsorption or 10-15 years for BACs.
- For water treatment plants using GAC we recommend using our GC1200N or GS1300.
- For water treatment plants operating in biological mode we recommend using our BAC GA1000N, BAC GS1000N, and BAC GS1300N. These grades are prewashed to minimise floaters, ash content and pH effect thereby accelerating the commissioning process.
Powdered Activated Carbon
for Potable Water
Powdered activated carbon is dosed into the water in small amounts (3 to 50 mg/litre, duty dependent) and removed downstream within the sludge.
- For water treatment plants with a 10 minutes or more contact time we recommend using our Acticarb PS1000.
- For water treatment plants with less than 10 minutes contact time we recommend using our 325 mesh Acticarb PS1300F.
Anthracite
for Potable Water
Anthracite is used in a filter through which the water is gravity fed to remove suspended solids / turbidity. The anthracite is regularly backwashed when head loss increases and does not need to be replaced until particle size has eventually reduced due to the abrasive effect of backwash – this will take many years (typically 15-20 years for premium ultra hard high rank anthracitic coal).
